why is my ex husband still contacting me when he says he’s happy with his life

My ex husband and I were together for 23 years. We’ve been seperated for 6. During that time we’ve always stayed in contact (texting). I’ve been in another relationship, that has since ended and he is in his second relationship. Even though we were both seeing other people, we have still stayed in contact?

My problem is that I’m still in love with my ex husband. Even though he’s in another relationship, I told him this and also that I wanted to get back together. He told me he was happy with his life. I accepted that and wished him well. I told him he will always have a special place in my heart.
I also said to him that because we have 3 grown up sons, we will probably run Into each other on the odd occasion.

I expected this to be the end of contact between us, except for family reasons, but I was wrong. He is still messaging me every 4-5 days and he initiates it all. I don’t mind him messaging me because I still love him but it’s very confusing. Why, if he’s happy with his life and the relationship he’s in, would he still be contacting me? Does he still love me and would there be a chance of getting back togetherness?
