Open ended contact, what next?

Hi, I’m needing some advice. About 3 months ago my ex broke up with me and gave me very lame reasons why he wanted to end things. I took the time to compose myself and refrained from contact for 30 days. After the NC, I wrote to him to say I was okay with his decision to split (even though I wasn’t) and said we needed a little time without contact if we were to remain friends. He did not respond to my letter. I left things at this point for a couple of weeks and then sent him a text. To my surprise he replied, saying he really didn’t have time to chat as he was very busy, but he hoped I was well.

Now I’m not sure what to do next. Should I wait to see if makes contact or just leaves things a little while before contacting him. Really confused as I don’t want to push him away. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
